Smartavlink HDMI 2.1 AOC with Cleerline SSF Fiber and Enhanced eARC
Smartavlink introduces a new generation of 8K HDMI active optical cables (AOCs) with enhanced eARC, incorporating advanced Cleerline SSF™ fiber technology. The design brings more stable and flexible ultra-high-definition audio and video connectivity to high-end home theaters, professional AV installations and smart home systems.
Cleerline SSF™ bend-insensitive fiber combines exceptional strength, flexibility and reliability. In extreme applications, harsh environments and densely packed cable pathways, it allows tighter bends and easier handling, helping extend fiber service life. SSF™ redefines optical fiber for the way it is handled and used in the real world.
Long distance 8K connections need more than bandwidth
Home theaters, professional AV systems and meeting spaces increasingly combine higher resolutions with more complex cable routes. As the distance between TVs, projectors, AV receivers, matrix switchers and equipment racks grows, cables must pass through walls, ceilings, conduits and tight corners. Installers need the video signal to reach the display, the cable to survive installation, and TV audio to return reliably to an AV receiver or soundbar.
Smartavlink combines HDMI 2.1 active optical cable technology, Cleerline SSF™ fiber and an enhanced eARC return path to address these practical requirements in long-distance 8K AV systems.
How active optical cables extend high bandwidth signals
As cable runs become longer, conventional copper cables are increasingly constrained by high-frequency signal attenuation, cable diameter and the surrounding electromagnetic environment. An active optical cable performs electrical-to-optical and optical-to-electrical conversion inside its connectors, carrying high-speed audiovisual signals over optical fiber.
For TVs located away from equipment racks, ceiling-mounted projectors and centralized equipment rooms, AOC technology provides a lightweight, slim connection while reducing the impact of electromagnetic interference on the optical transmission path. This Smartavlink cable is designed for HDMI 2.1 applications and 8K audiovisual connectivity.
How SSF fiber helps improve installation reliability
Glass fiber remains the primary transmission medium in an AOC. Routing through walls, negotiating tight corners, rearranging cables and pulling during installation can all place mechanical stress on the fiber. Cleerline SSF™ uses a patented polymer-encapsulated glass structure that helps protect the glass core and cladding from contaminants and moisture, reducing the risk of micro-damage spreading over time.
The value of this structure lies in its suitability for real installation conditions, rather than a claim that the fiber can never be damaged. Cleerline’s published information describes current SSF™ products with a minimum fiber bend radius of 2.2 mm and substantially improved resistance to repeated bending and impact. The applicable figures must match the specific SSF™ fiber model used by Smartavlink; 2.2 mm must not be assumed to be the bend radius of the finished HDMI cable assembly.
Common challenges when installing conventional fiber
These challenges often arise at ceiling corners, wall boxes, behind equipment racks and inside concealed conduits. SSF™ provides greater tolerance during handling, helping reduce the risk of damage from accidental bends, impacts and repeated cable movement.
Polymer protection compared with conventional fiber
The main structural difference is the protection surrounding the glass. SSF™ adds a polymer layer designed to help resist contamination, moisture and the development of micro-damage. Its value lies in making fiber more practical to handle in real installations; it does not make the fiber immune to damage.
Enhanced eARC for video and immersive audio
The enhanced Audio Return Channel, or eARC, sends audio from a TV back to an AV receiver or soundbar over the HDMI connection. Audio can originate from the TV’s streaming apps, broadcast programming or a source device connected to the TV.
According to HDMI’s official information, eARC supports high-bitrate audio, including Dolby TrueHD, as well as immersive audio formats such as Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. The formats available in a particular installation depend on support across the TV, audio equipment, content source and cable link.
Smartavlink incorporates an enhanced eARC return path into its AOC design. For long-distance installations, the key considerations are link stability and verified compatibility across the connected devices.
Practical benefits for installers and AV users
Applications for SSF fiber technology
- HDMI, DisplayPort and USB active optical cables
- Home theaters and professional AV systems
- Data centers and high-density equipment racks
- Medical imaging and operating-room cabling
- Broadcast, security and control centers
- In-wall, ceiling and narrow-conduit cable routes
- Industrial, outdoor, tactical and armored fiber optic cables
- Mobile systems requiring frequent deployment and recoiling
Practical value for AOC products
When SSF™ fiber is incorporated into HDMI, DisplayPort or USB AOCs, its main benefits can include:
- Enabling thinner, lighter cable designs
- Improving cable routing through conduits and around corners
- Reducing the risk of fiber breakage caused by pulling during installation or repeated bending
- Improving reliability during transport, deployment and long-term use
- Making the cable better suited to projects with limited space or complex installation conditions
These applications describe uses of SSF™ fiber technology. The capabilities of a finished cable depend on its complete construction and the requirements of the installation.
